How to rotate a video

In this article you will know how to rotate a video using popular video players.

Sometimes when watching movies or video clips, the video is displayed on the screen upside down or rotated at 90 degrees.

There are several reasons why that happens:

  • Possible errors in video coding or packaging;
  • A video was encoded using a particular codec and a filter;
  • A user uses old codecs and filters (in this case it is recommended to update the codecs);
  • During video recording device was located vertically.

Most modern video players allow to rotate the video directly while watching a movie or a video. That allows to comfortably view the rotated video without having to install additional software.

How to rotate a video in VLC

In order to rotate a video with VLC Media Player, click "Show extended settings" on the toolbar, or select "Tools" > "Effects and Filters" (Ctrl + E).

In the "Adjustments and Effects" tab, you must go to the "Video Effects" tab, and then select "Geometry". VLC Media Player allows a user to freely rotate video, and also it provides a standard set of options to rotate a video.

In order to randomly rotate a video in VLC, mark the Rotate checkbox, and arbitrarily change the angle of a video.

In order to rotate a video 90 degrees, or flip it vertically or horizontally, select the Transform checkbox. In this case, a user will have the following options:

  • to rotate a video by 90, 180 or 270 degrees;
  • to flip a video horizontally or vertically;
  • to transpose or anti-transpose a video.

How to rotate a video in Media Player Classic

Media Player Classic allows to rotate a video by using keyboard shortcuts. In order to find out what keys to use for an action, select "View" > "Options", and in the new window click "Player" > "Keys".

In the screenshot above there are video combinations of keys that are used to rotate a video in Media Player Classic by default. Thus, the combination Alt + Num 3 allows to rotate a video clockwise, and the combination Alt + Num 6 reflects a video horizontally.

How to rotate a video in GOM Media Player

In order to rotate a video in GOM Media Player it’s necessary to use the context menu item "Video" > "Rotate".

GOM Media Player allows to rotate a video 90 degrees, as well as 180 and 270 degrees. If there is a need to return the video to its original position, select "None".

How to rotate a video in KMPlayer

KMPlayer allows to rotate a video the same way as GOM Media Player does - by using the context menu. Select "Video (Basic)" > "Screen Rotation (CCW)". KMPlayer allows to perform the following actions with a video:

  • 90 degrees rotation + flipping;
  • 270 degrees rotation;
  • 90 degrees rotation;
  • 90 degrees rotation + mirroring.

Unlike other media players during the coup sample video, KMPlayer changes the orientation of the window and displays the video without black bars.

How to rotate a video in Light Alloy

Light Alloy doesn’t have such function as a video rotation, but provides an opportunity to flip a video vertically. In order to reflect a video vertically open "Picture Options" (Shift + V), and select the "Flip vertically" checkbox.
